PREFACE
The aim of this book is to provide students at FCE, CAE and CPE levels with a wide and thorough coverage of the most significant idiomatic phrases in use. Throughout the book it has been attempted to clarify the role that each idiom plays in spoken and written discourse, as well as the context in which it is likely to occur. Therefore, this book, which is intended for individual use as well as a reference medium, can be regarded as an indispensable reference “tool” that enables students to acquire a keen knowledge of the English language. Idioms make language sound more vivid and “native-like.”
The example sentences are drawn from a variety of written and spoken sources, but all of them have been made up by the author. Nevertheless, they retain the necessary simplicity and precision, illustrating the function of each idiom. More specifically, the present book is divided into 19 Units, which focus on a general topic (for example, Education, Shopping, Quarrelling and Making Up etc). In each of the Units, there is a short text which contextualises some idioms relevant to the topic, but also introduces various idioms which have little or nothing to do with the topic. Moreover, there are innumerable exercises that provide explanations written in italics to a list of idioms, thereby acquainting learners with several ways of saying the same thing. Furthermore, throughout the book students are given the opportunity to practise their translation-mediation skills, as they are asked to translate sentences or short texts from Greek into English (and vice versa). Besides, there is always a Listening Activity, whereby students listen to a short dialogue (or monologue) and fill in the blanks. At the end of the book, there is an Appendix providing a list of Engish proverbs and sayings with their Greek counterparts.
Of course, the present book is intended, not only for learners of English or those who are about to sit in for FCE or B2 exams, but is also valuable to all speakers of the language. I personally hope that studying English will turn into an unforgettable and constructive experience.
